Founder and Director
Marlisa graduated with honors from Spelman College where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. She went on to be the recipient of a Rackham Merit Fellowship from the University of Michigan and earned a Master’s Degree in Education as well as teaching credentials in both mathematics and economics there. The foci of her Master’s work were “multiculturalism in mathematics” and “girls and mathphobia”.

Marlisa has classroom experience at several of the top Independent schools in Los Angeles where she taught middle school and high school mathematics. She has worked with a variety of academic enrichment programs in several roles: teacher, administrator and student. Among them – SHARP program at NASA, Princeton Summer Research Experience, Summer Engineering Program at the University of Michigan and the Summerbridge Program.

Also engaged in professional and community activities, Marlisa served on the Advisory Board of UC College Prep Online and served as 2nd District Poverty Representative of the Community Action Board of Los Angeles County. She was elected President of the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College for two years and in addition was a selected fellow of the Educational Leadership Institute. Marlisa has served as an ITEST panelist for the National Science Foundation and recently assisted with the review of the Common Core Standards for Adult Mathematics Education. She is currently serving as an officer on the Board of Directors of the Holman Community Development Corporation.

Marlisa is the Founder and Director of Mathtopian Preparation, Inc. and has invaluable experience as a mathematics tutor and test prep coach. She prides herself on having a keen eye for recognizing a great tutor when she meets one and she has built a phenomenal team of professional, yet caring educators who are able to quickly engage students.

Maria graduated from UC Irvine with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (and a concentration in Biochemistry). She has always loved Chemistry and spent her last two years at UC Irvine working in an organic chemistry lab. Maria completed the Teaching Credential Program at Cal State LA and subsequently earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Pepperdine University. For the last several years she has been simultaneously in school and tutoring students. Maria loves teaching and confesses that patience is her strongest suit.

Natalie Paredes

Natalie graduated Magna Cum Laude from USC with a BA in Art History and a minor in Musical Theater. She was granted a Renaissance Scholar award for her work in both disciplines. Natalie has a passion for writing and literature. She enjoys brainstorming potential essay topics with students and seeing their writing skills flourish in areas such as grammar, punctuation, thesis development and paragraph styling for a variety of essay types. Natalie helps students to clarify any question about a historical event and expand on its social, economic and global context.

Cathy Garcia

Cathy graduated from Mount Saint Mary’s University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology and an English minor. For the past couple of years, she has been an instructor at Mount Saint Mary’s for the Biology department where she teaches Biological Dynamics and Molecular Biology laboratories. She is also a Supplemental Instructor for these students. Due to her extensive teaching experience, Cathy can accommodate a variety of students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles. Her ultimate goal is to attend medical school and become a physician who advocates for women’s health.

Andrea Huerta

Andrea is a UCLA graduate. She earned a BA in French and Global Studies.  She has tutored many different subjects including French, English, History, Spanish, ACT, SAT and ISEE since high school and throughout college. She currently works as a teacher at a one-on- one school where she has gained valuable experience working with students with unique learning styles. She enjoys one-on- one tutoring because she loves having the ability to really get to know a student’s passion, drive and learning gaps. She likes the challenge of finding and filling the educational gaps a student has and teaching them study skills they can translate into all academic subjects.

Stephanie Wong
Biology (all levels) and Psychology
Stephanie graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Upon graduation, she decided that she wanted to pursue a medical degree and subsequently completed a two-year post-baccalaureate program at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles. She took the necessary prerequisite courses and is currently applying for medical school. The post-baccalaureate program instilled in her a desire to learn and to master the hard sciences - Stephanie enjoys helping her students discover that same passion.
